If you live in, or a train ride from London, I invite you to take fresh look at our wonderful city, which has so much to offer. If you know where to look there is loads entertainment around that doesn’t cost a penny. Pack a picnic, drinks and you only need money for ice creams.  Use public transport to avoid traffic stress and parking fees, kids travel free under the age 11, so you only need your oyster card and you are away.  Allow lots of time and don’t try to pack too much into a day, leave rushing to term time.

  1. I nearly didn’t tell you about the heavenly Fulham Palace garden, however this is too good a secret to keep.  Once inside you almost feel that you are visiting a private country house. Romp on the lawn, have your picnic and then let the children discover one of the ‘Great trees of London’. The ancient Ilex is not only 450 years old, but has long branches just off the ground offering the perfect introduction to tree climbing. The walled garden is slowly being restored and currently has a glass house, and knot garden planted with little hedges. Quirky sculptures are dotted about, the children loved the giant conker and the elevated Bishop. Check the website for details of free ‘family days’ with object handling and replica costumes. The cafe is open all the year round with a BBQ on summer week ends. Nearest tube: Putney Bridge, then walk along the river through Bishops Park.
